It is well known that the population of sparrows, the homely birds are diminishing in the city, which is a matter of concern. Rotary Bangalore West, one of the world’s largest organizations, has taken this task of saving the environment as a mission and a movement with a difference, with an integral approach. Rotary Bangalore West organized “Save the Sparrow Seminar“  on Sunday (July 11) in association with Nature Forever to bring back sparrows to residential areas and corporate campuses of the city.

Rapid urbanisation has created havoc for nature and population of sparrows, the homely birds are diminishing in the city. Rotary Bangalore West has taken this task of saving the environment as a mission and to bring back sparrows to residential areas and corporate campuses. Rotary Bangalore West President Rtn. C S Prasannakumar, who is a scientist, showed the nest boxes for sparrows manufactured by their team under guidance from Nature Forever. Later they distributed these nest boxes among all the participants at the seminar.

The sparrow nest is an “adopt-a-bird” kit that can be easily mounted on walls, trees or on poles to attract birds to come, feed and also nest.  The Society distributes them to motivate people to be bird-friendly.

Mohammed Esmail Dilwar, founder Nature Forever and an avid lover of sparrows, shared his knowledge about how to bring sparrows back to the city. He said that plantation of exotic trees in urban regions is unfriendly and unnatural and stressed the need for planting native trees.

Chairman Distt Environment Committee RI Dist 3190 Rtn. Ashok Maheshwari, who is a resident of Jayanagar, explained the implementation of environment projects and specifically about sparrow saving.  “When we plant trees, we bring nature closer to us and when we invite birds, we bring nature still closer to our homes. Also, it is proved by research that listening to the chirping of birds with concentration for 15-20 minutes improves memory and it is the best relaxation technique. Rotary Distt 3190 has a plan to plant two lakh saplings which will attract birds that are native to the region. This will be our contribution to nature,” he said.

Sarath Babu, animal and bird conservator, shared his experience in dealing with wild life and birds and how they are rescued. They have helped the citizens to drive away snakes and rodents from their houses, he added.

I stay in J.P. Nagar 2nd Phase, Bangalore. I saw the “adopt a bird kit” at the PMPC conference (at Nimhans convention hall) on Sep 9th and 10th. I did not buy since I heard that there are no sparrows here in J P Nagar. But few days ago, I saw a sparrow near our windows. Looks like there are sparrows here and there is a chance to increase the number. I want to know now how to get the kit.
