Residents’ protest against mobile towers goes waste

Mobile towersThe protests by the residents of a housing society in Chunabhatti, Sion in Mumbai have been falling on deaf ears as their builder has been garnering the rent against two mobile towers on their building without fail.

The rent is being paid by the service providers for the towers to the builder for the towers which stand illegal.

The building in Sion was constructed in 2000 and by 2005, about seven floors were ready. Bhandup based Shree Swami Samarth Developers, the builders after two years allowed two telecom service providers to install towers on the building.

In November 2010, a housing society was formed by the residents. But after the formation of the association, the builder tried to stop them by complaining to the registrar of cooperative housing societies. The complaint stated that the signatures of two residents had been forged.

Also, residents had filed applications under the Right to Information Act at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation office but to no avail. The officials claimed that they were unable to trace the files of their building.

A resident has alleged that builder is not taking any extra step to obtain the occupation certificate for the building which is now more than seven years old.

Residents of the housing society claimed that the builder earns around Rs 8-10 lakh annually as rent from these two cell phone towers.

The developers have to say that earlier the building did not have any specified Floor Space Index (FSI) and to recover the expenses for the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) which costed around Rs 40-50 lakh, it was needed.
