RWA To Check The Structural Stability Of Cellphone Tower

The residential welfare associations who gladly let out their terraces for erecting cellphone towers are now doing a reality check.  The crashing of a cellphone tower in an apartment complex in Raja Annamalaipuram on Tuesday has sent shockwaves among residents and apartment owners association. There are at least 2,000 cellphone towers installed in the city atop apartments, commercial establishments and other multi-storeyed buildings.

Telecom agencies pay a monthly rent of Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000 to flat owners who gladly let out their terraces for erecting cellphone towers. Many residential welfare associations has facilitated the installation of these towers to generate revenue for maintenance of apartment. Now these residential welfare associations and activists in the city are doing a reality check.

The structural stability of these towers had been tested only once ever since it was installed a decade ago.Extensive studies are underway about the hazards of transmission from cellphone. Residents says that the tower cannot be allowed amid a thickly populated colony. The companies need NOC from housing society for erecting towers. According to Chennai corporation commissioner D Karthikeyan, as many as 1,775 towers identified in the city will soon be verified by its engineers for structural stability.
