RWAs against the Power Hike
Residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) have spoken out strongly against the power hike, calling it arbitrary and illogical. A power tariff hike in the middle of an anti-corruption movement has only made the matters worse. A regular middle class person is also feeling helpless.
Even a member of DERC’s trade advisory committee, Anil Sood, has called the hike absurd and a violation of the principle under which the regulatory body was originally set up. “The purpose behind DERC was to protect the interests of both the industry and the consumer, but it seems that only industry needs are being satisfied. The government has given the country a tariff shock,” he says.
“Three months ago, the chief minister said that as everything was going up because of inflation, it was only logical that power would be next. That’s the only reason they have decided to go with the new tariff hike, despite acknowledging that they have no way to properly audit the accounts given by discoms. Now we will only listen to a Comptroller and Auditor General report, and will appeal to the appellate tribunal if need be,” says Rajiv Kakria, a member of the Greater Kailash-I RWA. DERC is playing to the hands of discoms. It was set up as a regulatory body, but we can all see the work it is doing. The government has conveniently used it as a facade behind which it can hide, and absolve itself of any responsibility.”
