Members of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) from Greater Kailash-I, Safdarjung, Defence Colony and Masjid Moth had gathered in the morning and painted posters for about two-three hours in support of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign. Later, several people put in their signatures to mark their support to the cause.

With the help of alumni members of the College of Art, University of Delhi, the 40-member delegation painted two 10-metre posters and presented them to the organisers. Irked by instances of alleged corruption depriving residential colonies of basic facilities, a number of RWAs took their woes to Ramlila Maidan on Monday.

Meanwhile, RWAs of areas such as Safdarjung, Defence Colony and Dwarka got together to draft a resolution, asking the Prime Minister to implement the “stronger” Jan Lokpal Bill. Rajiv Kakria of the GK-I RWA said the present government Lokpal Bill has several clauses that are detrimental to RWAs as well as NGOs that take up issue of corruption from time to time.

According to RWA representatives, the associations deal with corruption at governmental offices on a day-to-day basis and, hence, the Lokpal Bill should focus specifically on removing corruption from the lower rungs of the bureaucracy.

“For some time now, we were limiting ourselves to taking out marches in colonies. However, on Sunday, we decided to meet at the Maidan and paint slogans on posters. We went in the morning so we could find a vacant spot to do our painting,” said Kakria.

Kiran Khullar, an artist who is member of a team called ‘Flavour of Art’, told Newsline that the response was “good”. Members of her group keep meeting at outdoor locations from time to time to sketch, and they felt the Anna protest was a good platform. “As corruption levels are getting too high, I painted in support of Anna. Seeing us paint, several people from the group came forward to join us,” she said.
