Today India is celebrating Engineer’s Day. Engineer’s Day in India is celebrated in the memory of Dr.M. Visvesvaraya who is an world known legendary engineer, responsible for successful design and construction of infrastructure all over India. This Engineer’s Day turns of with more celebrations and also an historic day as this celebration turns up its 150th year.

Dr.M.VISVESVARAYA   – Bharata Ratna (The Gem of India)

Engineer’s day is celebrated on September 15th every year in India. This day is celebrated in the honor of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1861-1962) who turns 150 years old this year (2011). The snippets from this great legend goes on like this, he was a notable Indian engineer, scholar, statesman and the Dewan of Mysore during 1912 to 1919, internationally recognized for his genius in harnessing water resources. He was responsible for successful design and construction of several river dams, bridges and implementing irrigation and drinking water schemes all over India. He served as the dewan of Mysore State and was considered to be the architect of the all-round development of Karnataka. Among his most successful projects are the design and construction of the K.R. Sagar dam which was named on the basis of the existence of famous lake during 19th century and adjoining Brindavan Gardens, a turn-around of the Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works, setting up foundation of the Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory and the also he is the establisher of the Bank of Mysore.

Visvesvaraya was a man of the embodiment of discipline and hard work

He was never late by a minute and he never wasted a minute. Once a minister was late by three minutes and the legend himself advised him to be punctual. “A man should do any work he undertakes methodically” – this was his firm faith. “Every man should understand his responsibility and do his best” – which was the essence of his teaching. He practiced this very honestly, and there are hundreds of instances to show this. Until he was confined to his bed he was very particular about his clothes. Even when he was 95 people who went to see him were surprised – he was so carefully and neatly dressed.

Engineer’s Day Celebration in India Today (September 15th, 2011)

September 15th is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in India. To commemorate the birthday of Bharata Ratna, legend, Sir M Visvesvaraya, many events takes place in India every year. National level organizations like The Institutions of Engineers (India) conduct meets and events on this occasion. Considering global awareness on climate change and realizing Engineers’ role in economic development and environmental responsibility, IEI is dedicating its 44th Engineer’s Day to “Engineering Preparedness for Disaster Mitigation”. Today India is celebrating Engineer’s Day. This Engineer’s Day turns of with more celebrations and also an historic day as this celebration turns up its 150th year. Our salute to the son of India Sir M. Visvesvaraya who paved way for all of us to see a brighter world today and the noble man left back few golden words to the people who are engineers, as the saying goes; “we can generate electricity, we can make the world a small place, we can build, we can move as we are engineers we are the world”.
