Serial burglary in an apartment in Yeshwantpur makes mockery of security

Platinum City Apartments in Yeshwanthpur burgled of valuables worth, in all, Rs 3.75 lakh. As many as five guards are deployed in each block and Vehicles are allowed in only after checking. Investigators suspect that someone working in the apartment could have committed this serial burglary. In two cases, the original keys were used to open the almirahs.

In all the three cases, the front doors of the apartments were forced open, and valuables kept in the almirahs were taken away. Police said Suttapa Mukherjee, 38, found the door of her 11th floor apartment open when she returned from work around 5 pm. An almirah in the bedroom was opened with its key, and a gold bracelet and chain were taken away. She reported a loss of Rs 35,000.

Another resident, Radha S Kulashekar, 35, complained to the police that her 10th floor apartment in C Block was broken into and gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh were taken. She found her apartment door open, when she returned from a relative’s place around 7pm. The furniture in the house was found disturbed, police said. The house was burgled after the woman had left at 2.30pm.

Police said the third house was also burgled after 2.30pm. Its resident, BA Kulkarni, 38, said gold ornaments worth Rs 90,000 were stolen from his seventh floor apartment in the D Block. He had left for work at 2.30pm, and found the front door open around 8.20pm.

Platinum City Apartments in Yeshwanthpur comprises eight blocks, with around 140 flats each. The apartment complex is guarded round-the-clock by more than 60 security guards. As many as five guards are deployed in each block. Vehicles are allowed in only after checking.

Police said the doors of the apartments were of low quality, offering little resistance to burglars. “We have collected some evidence and we are confident that the case will be cracked soon,” said a police officer.

Police suspect that the burglary was committed during the day, as one of the residents found her residence in Platinum City Apartments broken into around 5 pm.
