Sewage From Apartments choking Doddanakkundi Lake
Doddanakkundi Lake in Marathahalli that used to provide water to irrigate nearby fields is today choking with sewage from apartments that have recently mushroomed around it. Public concern is mounting as Doddanakundi is a hotspot for the booming real estate business. Land encroachers started to gobble up the lake area. Doddanakkundi corporator NR Sridhar Reddy agreed that allfour sides of the lake have been encroached. “As the lake has been encroached, I have requested the tahsildar to conduct a survey to which he has agreed”, he said.
Public concern is mounting as Doddanakundi is a hotspot for the booming real estate business. Builders and land owners are busy raising high-rise apartments. Unfortunately, most of these structures are coming up around the water body.
“The big lake was once a favourite fishing spot. But as more IT and BT companies emerged, huge buildings and apartments began popping up near the lake. Land encroachers started to gobble up the lake area. As encroachments went on, more sewage water from the apartments started flowing into the lake which is now completely polluted. The entire lake is filled with weeds,” said Rama Reddy, a resident of Doddanakundi.
“Due to negligence from officials and local leaders, the lake is in a shambles. If these leaders had the will, the lake could have been developed into a tourist spot to generate additional revenue,” Reddy said.
BBMP officials inspected the lake on July 30, 2009. While their report mentioned the three villages, Kagadaspura, Vibhuthipura and Doddanekundi, located near the lake, it failed to give details of encroached areas.
A BBMP source said that according to a government order dated April 19, 2010, the lake was taken over from Karnataka Fisheries Department on July 15 2010. Later, the BBMP handed over the lake to Bangalore Development Authority for development.
“BBMP has done 90% of fencing which is still under progress. The boundary demarcation survey is being done by Alcons consultancy map. The map has been submitted to tahsildar (east) for survey check. Plantation work at the lake is in progress,” the source said.
