SHRC directed BBMP Bangalore to inquire about Diamond District Cracks
After the previous news and residents cry over Diamond District Apartments, located on Old Airport Road whose beams and columns at the basement of the sprawling complex had developed large cracks, the State Human Rights Commission’s (SHRC) has decided to bring some relief to the residents.
SHRC has directed the BBMP to inquire within 10 days and submit a report within two weeks. Earlier, BBMP officials had said that any form of inquiry would be possible only after the residents submit a written complaint. A senior SHRC official said, “The commission ordered an inquiry as it felt the issue was very important. We are waiting for the BBMP report and suitable action will follow.”
BBMP commissioner Siddaiah said, “We will conduct an inquiry into the matter as per SHRC’s direction. Officers of the town planning department will be given the responsibility. A team of experts will also visit the apartment complex and examine technical aspects, keeping in mind the safety of residents. They will ascertain structural fitness of pillars and the structure. We will submit the report later.”
Residents of Diamond District have welcomed SHRC’s move with skepticism. One of them said, “Though SHRC’s decision is welcome, we doubt if officers will submit a truthful report. Hence, residents should also be involved in the inquiry. With the SHRC intervening, we hope builders will at least act now.”
