Store Water or Face Dry Days Till Saturday
Store water or face dry days till Saturday. This seems to be BWSSB’s advice to residents of north, east and central Bangalore. BWSSB had announced water shutdown in east, central and north division on Tuesday. The demand for water has increased by 15%-20% in summer. While the demand reached 1,250 mld (million liters of water per day), the supply was 450 mld on Thursday due to water shutdown as against 890 mld water supply every day.
Cauvery 2nd and 3rd stage was shutdown to undertake works for Cauvery IV stage II phase. However, south and west divisions were also affected. They could supply only 450 mld of water on Wednesday. Complaints of water shortage flooded Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) call centre on Thursday. The call centre received more than 50 complaints as against 20 on other days. A senior BWSSB official said the complaints were related to water shutdown. Many people have not stored water unaware of the shutdown. People demanded water supply.
With BWSSB pleading helplessness to supply water through tankers to all these areas, residents have no option but to rely on the expensive private water tankers. “There are not enough water tankers to cater to the demands. It would not be difficult for us to supply water to one area. Since the shutdown will affect the areas in east, south and central divisions, it is difficult to cater to the demands of all,” the official said. The official added that the situation will continue till Saturday. Though water supply will be restored on Friday, it will reach Bangaloreans only on Saturday.
The most affected areas are Chickpet, RT Nagar, Avenue Road, Pillanna Garden, HBR Layout, OMBR Layout, Jayamahal, Cottonpet, Benson Town.
