Surat gets three new projects under JNNURM
Surat: Three new projects have been sanctioned for Surat under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in order to provide better basic amenities to the residents of the city.
The projects that the Surat municipal corporation (SMC) has been given the approval include a 50 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant for the new area of Simada worth Rs 50 crore, expansion of a 100 MLD sewerage treatment plant to 140 MLD capacity at a cost of Rs 53 crore in Karanj and an e-governance project for the city worth Rs 25 crore. it has to be noted that the e-governance project is the first of its kind that has been sanctioned in Gujarat under the JNNURM.
SMC Commissioner Manoj Das has drafted the detailed project report (DPR) for the three projects that have been approved.
The central government will be providing half of the total funds required for the projects approved and sanctioned under JNNURM. The state government will fund 20 percent while the remaining 30 percent will be borne by the local civic body.
Under the first phase of JNNURM, in the last five years, Surat was granted 25 projects related to urban infrastructure and governance projects worth Rs 2,525 crore for urban housing, BRTS and other infrastructure. Till date, 18 of the 25 projects in Surat have been successfully completed.
The city has already got Rs 1,000 crore of its 50 percent share of JNNURM funds from the centre and about Rs 500 crore from the Gujarat government. SMC deputy commissioner, Sharad Mehta revealed that the funds under the JNNURM are released in phases. 25 percent of the central share is released at the time of approval. And later when the civic body sends reports on expenditure, another 25 percent fund is given and so on.
