Tax refunds within 45 days
The government plans to process tax refunds within 45 days for small taxpayers. Delay in receiving Income Tax refunds has been a major complaint of taxpayers and the department is hoping to address the issue on priority basis. The move is part of new CBDT chairman Sudhir Chandra’s plans to improve services for honest taxpayers.
To improve services and monitoring, CBDT is moving with plans to fill up 8,000 vacancies and hire an additional 22,000 personnel.Officials said introduction of the refund banker scheme across the country and the establishment of four central processing centres for tax returns would help expedite refunds. While the first CPC was set up in Bangalore, three more — in Manesar, Pune and Kolkata — have been finalised.
Income Tax officials say the proposal pertains to small tax refunds of amounts below Rs 1 crore. Chandra said he had been asking officials in the I-T department to work for the benefit of honest taxpayers and give them the respect they deserve.
