Traffic Jams brought Bangalore’s Traffic to a Full Stop

1 Comment Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Aug 19, 2011

A mile-long jam was seen on MG Road following continuous flow of protestors at the Gandhi statue at the junction of Kasturba-MG Road junction throughout the day.

What contributed largely to the traffic jam in the central business district was a tree fall on Raj Bhavan Road which is partially closed due to Namma Metro work at Minsk Square. “We have been trying to clear the traffic since early this morning. We were able to clear the road by afternoon. But the steady flow of protestors at Mahatma Gandhi statue created more congestion at the very important junction of Queen’s statue circle,” said deputy commissioner of police (Traffic-East) B A Muthanna. He said the situation was worse on Kamaraj Road and in Shivajinagar including Commercial Street as the roads had turned into rivulets.

Overnight heavy rain, a tree fall, water logging and Anna Hazare supporters’ protest brought Bangalore’s traffic to a full stop on Thursday. “It took me three hours to reach Indiranagar from Koramangala,” said P Deepak, a general manager with an automobile giant.”I got held up on MG Road for half an hour. Traffic refused to move. And I was late for a luncheon meeting,” said Julie Robinson, a media professional.

The ongoing traffic on Richmond Road and Old Airport Road was affected due to a huge trench on Primrose Road. This had slowed down the traffic in the area and it impacted the traffic on Residency Road and Richmond Road, a police officer said. The low-lying areas off Mysore Road were the worst hit.

“We are facing a problem of no-road situation in several parts of the city with roads turning into rivulets soon after the rains. This happens when the drains get cluttered resulting in overflowing of water from these drains,” said additional commissioner of police (Traffic) Praveen Sood.

Those who were coming from Whitefield said that rain and narrow roads halted them in their tracks. “At the Marathalli junction the road is so narrow that there is chaos on all sides. By the time we reach HAL main gate, the traffic comes to a standstill. With parking on both sides of the commercial establishments, we are unable to move forward,” said T Dhanaraj, a resident of Whitefield.

Slow moving traffic was also seen on BIA Road where work on the elevated road is simultaneously going along side road-widening. “I feel we should start five hours ahead of our flight to reach BIA now,” said B Shivarudraih, who heads a multi-media company.
