Unplanned Construction Work causing malaria increase
G.S. Sonal, Head of the Department of Malaria, National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) under the health ministry points out that increased construction activities and industrialization without proper planning has led to mosquito breeding and hence higher incidence of malaria in urban areas. He stresses builders and industrialists should ensure proper disposal of waste and construction material to avoid mosquito breeding. He adds that health department should be consulted while planning and constructing the buildings.
In 2010, India recorded around 45,000 deaths due to malaria. In total, the cases have gone down in numbers but the urban areas are witnessing more cases of the disease.
Said Raman Abhi, senior consultant and unit head, Internal Medicine, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon informs that the with the onset of summer one can expect a rise in the number of vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria.
