Waste ManagementChennai- Groups of residents across 60 wards are taking initiative to manage their waste at source. It was found that around 300 residents of Rajeswari Avenue Apartment at Mugalivakkam segregated waste into dry and wet.

The Chennai corporation ran an awareness campaign for waste segregation. It distributed two bins in each house for dry and wet waste. The civic body utilizes wet waste to generate electricity and dry waste like plastics for laying roads.

The corporation would also introduce source segregation of waste in more wards within two weeks. It identifies few wards in each of the 15 zones every week.

The civic body initially targets educated residents of each ward. The officials convince residential associations to initiate waste management at their respective residential apartments. Owing to good results, many more associations then come forward to join the programme.

The residents of Rajeswari Avenue Apartment are now willing to segregate the garbage they generate. They have plans to use the wet waste to generate electricity and manure. Electricity can be used for street light while manure can used for trees.

According to corporation officials, the success and failure of waste management lies in the hands of one and all residents in that apartment complex. The civic body is always ready give assistance to residents’ association which are willing to work for the waste management of their building.

As per data, around 4,600 tonnes of garbage is generated by the city in a day. An ordinary household generates 60 percent organic waste, 25 percent, recyclable waste and 10 percentĀ  hazardous waste. A large amount is dumped in drains and vacant pavements and plots are used as unofficial dump yards.

Waste segregation at source will reduce the amount of waste to be disposed of resulting in a cleaner city. Experts say that the maids and housekeeping staffs should be educated to distinguish dry and wet waste.

The corporation is also planning to distribute pamphlets across the city. Waste segregation at source can also help reduce the load on the civic body and landfills. It is a slow processĀ  will take 18 to 20 months to implement it completely.
