Waste Treatment Plant coming soon in Kochi
Residents in Cherthala in Kochi can finally lay their garbage woes to rest. Inspite of the repeated claims by the municipality that they will do something to sort out the problem due to troubles in land acquisitions. The Defence minister A K Antony who also happened to from the area has now stepped in to sort out the mess. The minister informed the Cherthala municipality authorities that the Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE) would set up a state-of-the-art waste treatment plant for the municipality if it hands over the land for this purpose.The DRDE team asked the civic body to hand them 4.5 acres of land for setting up a modern and advanced waste treatment plant.
In June the municipal chairperson sent a letter to the defence minister seeking his help for solving the garbage problem of the municipality. The area has a population of over 50,000 people.He also appraised the minister the financial crunch the municipality is facing and its inability to make such a huge investment by the body. K C Antony, a councilor and a member of the committee on garbage treatment plant, said the DRDE officials has informed that once the Direct Project Report (DPR) is over, the project will be completely executed within eight months. They also said that the completion of the DPR will take atleast a month.
