Kolkata water woes soon to be sorted out
Residents in Kolkata can finally get relief from water shortage as the corporation has devised a plan to deliver water to the residents through pipelines. The project will be launched by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department and will cost around Rs 200 crore. The project is to lay pipelines from river Hooghly to Rajarhat New Town. Officials have said that a 20-million-gallon water tank is already constructed at New Town. However the requirement will come to around 100 million gallons daily once the township comes up.
The project at the initial stage will deliver about 20 million gallons from the river and it will be then purified for the supply as drinking water. It would take another 5-6 years to meet the demand of another 80 million gallons. The residents in the Rajarhat area were reeling under the the acute shortage of water from a long time. The water delivered to them at present, is underground water. With the designs being laid out for the project, the residents are optimistic that their woes will be finally taken care of by the civic authority.
