West Bengal depleting Coal Reserves disrupts Power Supply

No Comments Sub Category:Awareness,Community Posted On: Oct 19, 2011

Brace yourself to celebrate a dark Diwali this year in Kolkata. The state will soon face acute power shortage in the days to come. This power shortage can be blamed because of West Bengal’s inadequate coal supply to the thermal power generation plant. The coal reserves in the state are on the  fast track of depletion. To make matters worse the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDCL) is reeling under a Rs 900 crore debt and it does not have enough money to fund buying of coal in a daily basis. The problem has grown into vast proportions and can already be witnessed in WBSEDCL augmentation and maintenance work of its distribution of power across the state.

WBSEDCL officials have said that there is a rise in the generation costs following the rise in coal prices and presently the corporation can meet only half the demand. Earlier the West Bengal government promised to pay Rs 60 crore to the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) in a bid to resume the coal supply. The sum will not wipe out Rs 195 crore debt that the state already owes to the ECL meanwhile ECL technical director is likely to meet state power minister Manish Gupta this week to discuss the future course of power supply in the state. The state government also owes a debt of another Rs 305 crore to various coal companies.
