According to Chief Executive and Managing Director of L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Ltd Vivek Bhaskar Gadgil, work on the Hyderabad Metro is going on at a fast speed and, if it completes 71.16 km in three lines in five years as planned, it will be a world record.

On Monday, while delivering a lecture on urban infrastructure at Gitam University, Gadgil said, “It is the largest metro rail project in public-private-partnership mode in the world and if everything goes as planned, and the first line between Nagole and Mettuguda will become operational on the next Ugadi day, 360 days from now.”

According to him it was the biggest urban development project for L&T with an investment of Rs 18,000 crore. The company will get a 25-year extension to run the metro if it delivers on key performance indicators. He added it is collaborating with several world-class companies for project management, communications, and ticketing.

Through communication-based track control the driverless trains are run. It regenerates 35 to 40 per cent of power from its braking system, to reduce the carbon footprint.

The first train to be imported from a Korean company would be delivered in May, six to eight months ahead of the inaugural, for trail runs, as said by Gadgil.

Gadgil said the single pier design called spine and wings was unique; describing it as a lifetime project. As execution was on busy roads and safety had to get top priority, About 80 per cent of the work is done with components pre-stressed at the yard.

Gadgil said that there was a policy shifts of late, stating that India had been lagging behind in infrastructure development. He said it’s high time the new city centres were developed, describing urbanisation as irreversible.
