Rainwater harvesting mandatory in housing societies
Pune: The office of district deputy registrar is all set to popularise rainwater harvesting (RWH) in the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad housing societies. In this regard, it will soon launch a special program for which a special study is being conducted.
RWH has been made compulsory for all upcoming residential projects in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). But still, many old housing societies have not implemented RWH system, alleged District deputy registrar Kiran Sonawane.
He said that there are around 13,000 co-operative housing societies among which only the old societies which do not have the system are being targeted. Since the depletion of groundwater level is a matter of utmost importance, implementation of the RWH has to be taken up on a large scale. The only way left to rise the water table is by recharging it, he added.
In general, water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rainwater. The collected rainwater can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the groundwater. The water can be used for agriculture, gardening, livestock, etc. The harvested water can also be used for drinking water as well after purification is done.
Once the study gets completed, the authority will finalise norms to help societies set up rainwater harvesting system. Special workshops will be conducted in collaboration with NGOs and rainwater harvesting experts. Since every housing society has different kind of requirements, it is necessary to suggest different RWH models to them.
According to experts, every 1,000 sq ft of constructed area can harvest 70,000 litres and every acre of open area can harvest 25 lakh litre during the rainy season. Going by this calculation, Pune city can harvest more than 1.75 lakh litres during the rainy season.
