Aadhaar numbers with printing issues cause 4 cr backlog
New-Delhi- With the Aadhaar card playing a major role for an individual’s identification, there have been complaints from a large number of people who have not procuring their unique numbers for more than six months.
Despite the PM initiating the direct cash transfer to about 20 districts, there has still been a delay on creating 4 crore Aadhar numbers by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) due to printing issues of the documents.
As per the government, there were about seven schemes being rolled out from the 26 schemes which were scheduled to use the Direct Benefit Transfer. These schemes included Dhanalakshmi Scheme, Indira Gandhi Matrutva Sahayata Yojana, post-matric scholarship for SC, ST and OBC students, pre-matric scholarship for SC students, stipend to trainees based on the welfare of SC/ST job seekers via coaching and guidance and vocational training.
As per the complaints from residents, for some it has taken over six months to get their unique numbers and for some others it took over a year despite providing all the necessary details like the iris scan, age details and fingerprints.
It is said that there is a backlog of at least 3-4 crore Aadhar numbers and that the backlog will continue as it is an ongoing process.
As per a municipality official, they are in the process of clearing the backlog and are expecting to clear in a month or two. The official also said that the authority till date has enrolled about 26 crore people and the government plans to authorize enrolling another 26 crore for the coming phase.
Owing to the targets set, the process of allocation of numbers will be sped and the pending numbers will be dispatched sooner. There are about three Aadhar card printing agencies situated in Hyderabad, Karnataka and Noida.
The UIDAI has floated a tender regarding the printing of the Aadhaar documents as the existing printing agencies’ tender period will be ending soon. They further requested proposals (RFP) which will be a pre-bid conference on January 21. The last date to submit the queries will be January 26 and date of issue of clarification will be January 30. This is followed by the last date for the submission of bids on February 26. Once the evaluation and matching of the new rates are done, the results will be declared on March 14.
Three companies will be given the tender for printing the Aadhar cards and distribution of the numbers across the country will be done by UIDAI. However the authority has planned to print and dispatch about 92 crore documents by March 2014.
