BMC to extend deadlines for inviting suggestions on ELU maps

No Comments Sub Category:Civic Issues,Mumbai,Municipality Posted On: Mar 02, 2013

DeadlineBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has for the third time extended the deadline for getting objections and suggestions from the citizens for the existing land use (ELU) maps.

Since January 24, deadlines have been shifted twice. Now it has been extended for another month.

BMC had got around 3,000 responses on the last day of giving suggestions for the ELU maps. With just one day remaining, 3,000 people came out with suggestions and feedback on the deadline day.

Officials in the development plan (DP) and the standing committee have confirmed the extension after holding a meeting to decide the deadline. They are sure it will be extended for at least 15 days.

Around 200 errors were found from the wards of M-east (Chembur, Trombay), H-west (Bandra, Santa Cruz) and K-west (Juhu). The responses have been obtained from the citizens after BMC had put it online for scrutiny by citizens.

The said extension is given as it will take some time to compile all the suggestions and objection so obtained. As per officials, many citizens confuse the existing land use with planned land use (PLU). Till date, whatever suggestions have been obtained, about 60-80% are repetitive. Only 20% pertain to ELU.

Also, many people have sent more than one objection which are same. They are sending the same objection more than once via different methods, email, letter, through an NGO, etc.

At least two months of period was given to the citizens to respond to the ELU maps. However, many responded on the last day, i.e, February 28.

Many corporators, citizens’ groups, NGOs, etc have found several errors while scrutinizing the ELU maps at ward levels. They want the civic body to rectify the issues before going ahead with the new development plan for the next 20 years from 2014.

The ELU maps, so formed are the basis of the development plan for the years 2014-2024. The DP is the land use map of the city.

After receiving the final suggestions and objection, the BMC will send its officials to the individual wards to check the errors and solve them. If needed, the changes will be made in the maps and then work will start to prepare the draft of the development plan.
