BMC to take suggestions on waste water recycling

Waste water recyclingBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now planned to seek suggestions and objections for wastewater recycling in the city.

The bylaws of wastewater recycling which was made three years ago for new properties in Mumbai was not taken seriously then. Now, the civic body want to make the recycling process mandatory and plans to ask for suggestions from citizens on how it can be done.

As per the bylaws, the new housing societies in a locality which has an area of more than 2000 square metre or has more than 60 flats will have to recycle waste water and use it for non-potable purposes.

Housing societies that do not have suction or overhead tanks are exempted from this rule. Also, bylaws will be sent to the general body after receiving citizens’ suggestions.

With the wastewater recycling process in place, the city will be able to conserve 10% of water resources. However, the residents and developers feel that it will put an additional burden on them.

According to the residents, the installation of the recycling plant could cost each society approximately Rs 5 lakh, which will put extra burden on them.

As per Pali Hill Residents’ Association, with no provision of funds provided by the BMC, setting up and maintaining the recycling plant could prove to be costly for housing societies.

Others claim that even if the civic body make the norm mandatory, how will it ensure that the developers abide by it as there is no fool proof mechanism.

However, as per officials, the recycling system that has been installed in housing society in Dadar has been a success and it will be introduced in the rest of the city.

The features that will be checked before installation of such a system include its feasibility, height of the building, requirements and overall costing.

Also, BMC has taken an initiative to promote rainwater harvesting in the city. To start with, the civic body has planned to train the senior citizens of the city of good effects of saving water.

This workshop was recently held in the BMC headquarters. The workshop went on for three hours which was organised to train 4,000 seniors in rainwater harvesting over the next two years.

Around 55 seniors attended the workshop to understand why rainwater harvesting was necessary and how to do it.

An extensive campaign on rainwater harvesting was held last year as well with the civic body’s officials going to residential properties in Mumbai and spread awareness.
