Training programBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken an initiative to promote rainwater harvesting in the city.

To start with, the civic body has planned of training the senior citizens of the city of good effects of saving water.

This workshop was recently held in the BMC headquarters. The workshop went on for three hours which was organised to train 4,000 seniors in rainwater harvesting over the next two years.

Around 55 seniors attended the workshop to understand why rainwater harvesting was necessary and how to do it.

As per a corporator, senior citizens are taken as liabilities, but they are actually assets for the society and there are many people who would want to give back to society after post retirement. The programme was started keeping this in mind.

Since, it was becoming difficult to reach out to everyone in the city, this programme was conceptualized. Also, seniors would better spread the word.

The chief of BMC said that water is a scarce resource and needs to be conserved as many places in the city are experiencing drought and drought-like situations.

Experienced and skilled senior citizens are ideal to share the importance of the resource with their neighbours and students. Necessary training and knowledge will be imparted.

An extensive campaign on rainwater harvesting was held last year as well with the civic body’s officials going to residential properties in Mumbai and spread awareness.

The civic body had put up hoardings and had booklets printed for school students explaining the procedure of rainwater harvesting.
