Chennai Residents to Pool Money on Developmental Issues
Perungudi, a town panchayat in Chennai, has over eight residential colonies such as Tirumalai Nagar, Ramappa Nagar, Church Road, Elim Nagar, CBI Colony, Rajiv Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar, Telephone Nagar and Rajalakhmi Avenue. And most are IT employees working in companies sprinkled along the OMR reside here. Ashort haul of 100 metres to the main road is a laborious task for J Amudha in Perungudi. It’s not just because the 30-year-old is pregnant-the roads are corporation-forsaken. But the residents haven’t let the potholed stretches remain just that. They have pooled in money and started repair work on some of the worst-maintained stretches. K P Jehangir, a resident of Ramappa Nagar reported saying, “The drainage projects were handled by rookie workers. There was no one from the panchayat to assess the quality of work.”
