Chennai Residents to Pool Money on Developmental Issues

1 Comment Sub Category:Awareness,Community Posted On: Sep 19, 2011

Perungudi, a town panchayat in Chennai, has over eight residential colonies such as Tirumalai Nagar, Ramappa Nagar, Church Road, Elim Nagar, CBI Colony, Rajiv Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar, Telephone Nagar and Rajalakhmi Avenue. And most are IT employees working in companies sprinkled along the OMR reside here. Ashort haul of 100 metres to the main road is a laborious task for J Amudha in Perungudi. It’s not just because the 30-year-old is pregnant-the roads are corporation-forsaken. But the residents haven’t let the potholed stretches remain just that. They have pooled in money and started repair work on some of the worst-maintained stretches. K P Jehangir, a resident of Ramappa Nagar reported saying, “The drainage projects were handled by rookie workers. There was no one from the panchayat to assess the quality of work.”

Soon after the completion of the drainage works, the residents approached the panchayat and complained about the torn-up roads. But when the promises failed to materialize, the residents decided to lay the road by pooling money. “We started the road-laying works in Kurinji Nagar. People in nearby streets like Ramappa Nagar also want to follow suit,” said Jehangir.
The indirect damage from the bad roads was that the area lost favour with IT employees seeking rented houses. “Many who had taken houses on rent in the area have packed up and left. Riding a vehicle on the stretch is impossible,” said K C George, a senior citizen.
Many a time motorists who attempted the road tasted mud. “Even ambulances can’t enter the locality. It is very bumpy. “Officials don’t bother to look into the issue,” said G K Anish, an IT employee who is vacating his house. As the roads are bad, the garbage vehicles also skip the locality. “The entire locality stinks. We are fed up with the administration in Perungudi and have decided not to cast votes in the local body elections,” said Anish. Panchayat officials or the MLA could not be contacted for comments.
