Chennai to get ample water from Veeranam Lake
Chennai- Water problems in Chennai has always been an issue resulting in conflicts with the neighboring state. Perhaps the problems have come to an end as the city’s water supply will be boosted with the additional supply from the Veeranam Lake.
According to an official from the water board department, the Veeranam Lake which contains 0.03 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water will now be added with another 0.5 tmcft of water from the Mettur dam. The reservoir has a capacity of 1.4 tmcft of water. The official further stated that they will be getting water from Mettur which will add up an additional 2.44 tmcft of water from Karnataka.
Due to the shortage of water in the reservoir, the water supply from Veeranam was suspended. However, officials from the Water resources department and Metro Water denied the rumor about Veeranam Lake going dry.
Chennai is currently dependent on four reservoirs, Poondi, Sholavaram, Red Hills and Chembarambakam followed by Veeranam supplementing the water supply. It is expected that the city will get an additional water supply of 100 million litres per day (MLD) later this month with the commissioning of desalination plant in Nemelli.
Nevertheless, the city need not worry for the next five months as the Water Resources Department officials have stated that the four reservoirs which supply water have 5 tmcft of water. This will be sufficient for the given period along with the water from Veeranam.
After a great controversial deal, the city will also get water from river Krishna from the Kandleru reservoir. River Krishna is expected to provide another 4 tmcft of water to the city. As per the Water Resources Department, the current Poondi reservoir has more than 150 cusecs of water being received from river Krishna due to the ongoing repair works.
The officials stated that once the repair work is finished, they will receive 1,000 cusecs of water per day. Currently, Chennai supplies about 830 MLD of water per day.
At present the city has 4.7 tmcft of water in addition to 100 MLD water from Minjur and one tmcft of water will last for a month. It is expected that an additional 100 MLD of water from Nemelli will be received soon this month.
The Nemelli desalination plant has almost finished more than 98 percent of its work and followed by an inspection by the Minister for Rural development and Municipal administration. The plant will cater more than 15 lakh people in South Chennai.
