The report says that the respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) levels in the areas have increased in 2011-12 as compared to that of 2010-11. RSPM consists of dust particles that are lesser than 10 micron size.

A resident of Ajax in Tiruvottiyur complains that the roads are not being swept regularly. Moreover, the dust level has reached heights with ongoing construction work and road widening. The area was once very clean but now the roads have becomes extremely dusty.

The pollution level recorded in Kathivakkam in 2010-11 was 219 microgram/cubic metre. This was the maximum pollution recorded for this area. But, it reached to 363 microgram/cubic metre in 2011-12. The annual average levels of Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the area have gone up to 22 and 27 from 12 and 18 microgram/cubic metre respectively.

However, the RSPM , SO2 and NO2 levels in Manali have recorded a dip. The annual concentration of SO2 in Manali is 20 microgram/cubic metre while it is just 9 microgram/cubic metre in Anna Nagar. The standard values for SO2 and NO2 is 50 microgram/cubic metre and 40 microgram/cubic metre respectively.

As per experts, Tiruvottiyur and Washermenpet areas are well known for high respiratory and gastroenterological problems. Both the areas are witnessing increased patients in proportion to the population. Anna Nagar and T. Nagar are also no more clean residential neighbourhoods as they have recorded high RSPM levels.

The northern parts of the Chennai city has industrial units, chemical plants, refineries and a dumping yard where mixed garbage is being burnt daily.
