Delhi Metro’s phase 3 first corridor to be operational by March 2014
The first corridor in phase three of Delhi Metro – the Central Secretariat-Mandi House corridor via Janpath – will be operational by March next year.
Delhi Metro is working on constructing a 3 km long underground pass to avoid the heavy traffic at Rajiv Chowk station. The chief of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said that, 75% of the project has been completed, i.e. the stretch from Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor. He expects the corridor to be operational by March next year, although it was scheduled on October 2014.
This new line will accommodate at least 1.5 lakh interchange commuters from Rajiv Chowk to Central Secretariat and Mandi House interchange stations.
A DMRC spokesperson said that, as per the statistics, around 72,000 and 69,000 passengers will be accommodated at the Central Secretariat and Mandi House interchange stations. In turn, it will ease the congestion at Rajiv Chowk. Rajiv Chowk experiences at least 5 lakh passengers on a daily basis. Also, the linking of two close by stations, Central Secretariat and the Mandi House, will relieve the overcrowding.
He added that around 9000 passengers will be passing Janpath and 6000 in Mandi House after the completion of the project. It seems to be an achievement for Delhi Metro by completing the civil work in a shorter span at Janpath underground station.
Tunneling work between Mandi House and Janpath is in progress, while the stretch between Central Secretarit to Janpath is over in both up-line and down-line tunnels.
