DMRC completes tunnel work under Ring Road

No Comments Sub Category:Metro Posted On: Mar 14, 2014

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at Shalimar Bagh recently completed a tunnel under the operational Ring Road on the Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar metro corridor. The tunnel at Shalimar Bagh was constructed by DMRC engineers without any problem to the traffic running on the ring road above. The TBM completed the task of a 1,247 meter long tunnel from Netaji Subhash Place to Shalimar Bagh consisting of 1,037 rings with a diameter of 5.7 metres. The performance of TBM was slow down in the month of October last year.

Metro spokesperson mentioned that the tunnel also crossed the elevated viaduct of the currently operational Dilshad Garden to Rithala Metro corridor near Netaji Subhash Place, which was a huge challenge for DMRC engineers. According to the spokesperson, this part of the alignment had passed below a drain near Netaji Subhash Place, because of which 19 meter tunneling could be done below the surface.

Spokesperson also added that the tunnel also passed below the Kasturba Polytechnic, which is another mile stone in area. This process is for the up line whereas the process of tunneling for down line is expected to start in April.

The 59 km long Majlis Park – Shiv Vihar corridor of Phase 3 consists of about 14 kms of underground lines in which 5TNMs are working currently. While in complete Phase 3, 19 TBMs are working.

Spokesperson also says that DMRC is planning to construct 53 km of underground Metro lines as part of its Phase III construction in which about 34 TBMs are expected to be used. In phase 3, 74 tunnels will be constructed.
