Expansion of Patna airport to start soon
Patna- With the Bihar Cabinet giving approval for the transfer of a land chunk owned by the state home (special) department to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airport expansion project of Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan International airport will soon be started.
The 6.37 acres of land, being located adjacent to the city airport, would be given to the AAI at Rs 114.66 crore. Currently, the land is being used by the Special Task Force (STF), said official sources.
In terms of growth and domestic passengers, the Patna airport has emerged as one of the top airports in India. But the space available with the airport is less both inside the terminal and outside. The airport’s runway length being too small, safe and smooth landing and takeoff of big aircraft is a constraint.
Earlier the AAI had requested the government to shift the state hangar, IAS Bhavan and Bihar Flying Club, which are situated close to the airport, so that even that land could be used for a new airport terminal building of the airport. But the government seems to have not considered the proposal.
Observing the growing number of passengers at the Patna airport, security measures have also been made stronger at the Patna airport by installing 42 CCTV cameras and replacement of two conveyor belts at the airport.
Sources said that the cameras currently have three days’ storage capacity and the footage would be motioned by trained CISF personnel. In order to strengthen the airport security, a request was made for installing CCTV cameras to the AAI in 2010 itself. But due to some technical problems the installation work was put on hold.
Even though there are security personnel at the entrance of the terminal building to check the safety, electronic surveillance is very important at any airport.
