Housing societies in Mumbai to face heat for illegal mobile towers
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to eradicate the illegal mobile towers in the city. In the action, many housing societies are also going to face the heat because of the same.
As per the civic body, around 1830 mobile towers out of 3705 towers in the city are illegal. Out of these, many have come up after 2010. Apart from the civic authorities and police officials, housing society members will also be held responsible for erecting the illegal towers and also, they will be punished accordingly.
This move by the civic body has gone well with many activists and residents. One of the activists has commented that the government should set a deadline in order to bring down such towers.
Minister of state for urban development has said that the matter is being examined as the last time BMC had initiated action against illegal mobile towers in 2010, telecom companies had moved the high court and obtained a stay on it.
Residents in Mumbai are also forcing the civic body to finalise the draft policy on installation of mobile towers soon.
Due to these mobile towers, many citizens have been complaining of serious ailments due to the radiation from these towers. The radiation limits of cell phone towers need to be monitored as whether they adhere to the norms or not.
After the protests by citizens on draft policy on the installation of mobile phone towers, BMC had decided to seek their suggestions for the same.
The draft policy, announced few months back, got many bad remarks from the citizens. Due to which, the civic body had planned to include recommendations before it finalises the policy in coming months.
Residents of such properties in Mumbai were worried about the effects of radiation on health and had been campaigning for more stringent actions on the installation of mobile phone towers.
To fasten the whole process, BMC had uploaded the draft policy on its website and citizens have to download it to add suggestions.
