Mandur residents strict over deadline
The deadline issued by the communities living around Mandur landfill came to an end on January 31. As the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will need another three or four months for making alternative arrangements to dispose garbage , said commissioner Siddaiah.
The Commissioner said the BBMP officials to request the villagers to bear with the civic authority for some more months. In a council meeting, the commissioner said that the government had given the BBMP go-ahead to acquire land to set up waste management plants.
BBMP has already identified lands at Arudi near Doddaballapur and Togarighatta in Bangalore Rural district but putting the systems in place will take time. BBMP higher official said that it is better to recycle all the waste and only inerts and debris should be sent to landfills.
At Togarighatta, 600 acres of land was scattered and not in a block. However, at Arudi, the 476 acres was at one place, accessible from the main road.
The land rate at Rs. 10.60 lakh an acre has been fixed by the Bangalore (Rural) Deputy Commissioner and the Chief Secretary had also approved the acquisition proposal. The Revenue Department will also hand over around 78 acres across 30 locations in and around the city to the BBMP, while the Karnataka Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) had approved the setting of a plant at Kalbalu on 70 acres.
BVG India Ltd who bagged 52 packages out of which the contractor has not yet started functioning in 40 packages, so the BBMP council decided to scrap 40 packages from the contractor. BBMP counsel representing the case in the high court, asked the court not to extend time for BVG and also asked to re-tender the solid waste management packages.
BBMP officials have already started with the re-tendering package working where contracts have not been put into operation.
