Metro raised high to cross roadblock
At Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Metro line is 23m high, which is not the highest in the network but it is a difficult task to build it much higher. A heavy traffic intersection, flyover and Airport Metro Express will be fully operational that’s why it is a big task to construct the elevated track of the Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar line of Phase III.
For this project, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is focusing to use a new technology. Mr. Anuj Dayal, says that as we know that it is a busy intersection with an operational Metro line, so they are going to use special tools in the construction of this project. The design of this project has been made to show the unique features. He also added that the special feature of this project is the curving viaduct of line 7 (Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar), which will come in from Brar Square and curve over the Dhaula Kuan intersection towards Moti Bagh.
In addition to the other difficulties, the viaduct of Airport Metro Express is creating problems as it has forced the Delhi Metro to cast special spans for the corridor. It is one of the longest in the Delhi Metro network and has a length of 37m. Out of these longer spans, three will curve over the intersection, flyover and the Airport line while the traffic underneath be navigated.
The Metro will use three long spans so that traffic on the surface or Airport Metro not be affected. The area between the pillars at the middle point is 37m, which is the longest in overall Metro network. The scenario of spans will be 28m-37 m-21 m. The normal span is 31m long and consists 9 to 12 segments whereas the span used by Metro has 13 segments.
To place these spans, Delhi Metro will use special tools like Macalloy bar. The Macalloy bar will lift the segments to the segment launcher. As this process is sophisticated process. it will take 1hour to lift each segment one Meter above. In this process, three weeks of time will be taken to lift the entire spans, this is when the Airport Metro line will not be working.
