Non payment of property tax will now be a social hazard
New Delhi- The non payment of property tax by the owners has led to various actions by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Last week, the SDMC resorted to drum beating in front of the tax defaulter‘s houses to embarrass them by announcing their name in public. Drum beating tactic was carried out to embarrass people who hadn’t paid their property taxes apart from just the penalty.
There were about 67 buildings which were targeted with drum beating in areas like Nehru Place and Mahipalpur area under Central and Najafgrah zones of South Delhi Municipal Corporation. The properties included shops and hotels.
The tax defaulter’s amount summed up to lakhs of rupees. Dhol beaters were hired by the officials who further had to inform the entire neighborhood the names of the tax defaulters. This extreme step was taken by the officials as they had no other option to get the tax arrears back.
It is presumed that these traditional techniques by the officials to skim the tax out of the defaulters will become a social hazard.
