PMC plays brass band to recover property tax
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to recover the long pending property tax of approximately over Rs 5 lakh in a new initiative.
The civic body has decided to hire a brass band to play music to awake property owners who have not paid pending property taxes on time.
This brass band will follow the civic officials anywhere they go and will play music in front of the property for not paying tax on time.
The decision about the same was taken by the Additional Municipal Commissioner after his visit to Cantonment Board in Ahmednagar. With the same initiative, they were able to able to recover the dues of property tax.
Already, the civic body has launched the initiative in Dhankawadi, Baner, Shivajinagar, Yerawada and Market Yard and now it is thinking of putting on the method on properties of over Rs 5 lakh dues.
On the first day, as per officials, around Rs 23 lakh has been collected from the malls and hotels. Furthermore, this initiative will go on for a month to recover as much as possible dues.
A target of Rs 670 crore was set for property tax by March end and only Rs 600 crore has been collected.
Earlier, the civic body had proposed to increase property tax by 8% for 2013-14 to standing committee and after discussion it came down to 6% after a meeting last month.
The proposed 8% hike had added more revenue to the civic body which was estimated at Rs 3,605 crore. But with the current hike, it is not going to make any substantial contribution to the civic body.
The 6% hike that has been approved will push up the revenue by around Rs 40 crore whereas the 8% hike had given Rs 52 crore. Also, the proposal of hike in property tax was accepted to ensure sufficient revenue for development projects in Pune.
