Property tax collection goes door to door in Surat
Surat – As the financial year is approaching, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has pulled up their socks to collect pending pending property tax.
The target for SMC for current financial year is Rs 485 crore. So far the civic body has recovered tax and capital expenditure works of worth Rs 324 crore and this may cross Rs 425 crore by March, 31, 2013. They have beaten their collection record in financial year 2012- 13 ( Rs 315 crore ).
The infrastructure expenditure till date is around Rs 885 crore and may cross Rs 1100 crore by March , 31, 2013. The highest amount spent by them was around Rs 840 crore in 2011. According to the deputy commissioner, the civic body will meet their targets and shall increase it by 30 percent in every coming year.
The department has successfully achieved 70 percent of the target set for the collection of property tax. After the campaign by BJP-ruled SMC, congress party of Surat city paid property tax dues of ten years on its office building which amounts to be Rs 1.09 lakh. This amount was given after a meeting held between local leaders.
The former president of Congress informed the reason behind not paying tax dues. They are in very bad condition when it comes to fund. They have not paid salaries to office peons from past four months.
Now the civic body is targeting to collect due taxes from the users in the diamond city. They are opting door-to-door campaign in all seven municipal zones to collect the pending property tax . They will also include residential and commercial users in the municipal zones who have not paid their tax.
The department officials of SMC visited Limbayat zone and collected Rs 60 lakh tax from the powerloom unit owners. With just few days left into go for financial year, the officials are trying and opting new ways to collect tax from tax defaulters.
