Road construction along Buckingham canal to start
Chennai- The residents of north Chennai will be soon relived from traffic and need not to struggle for space on the congested road. In few months a new road along north Buckingham canal will make a good way for heavy vehicles.
Water Resource Department is planning to lay approximately 11 km and seven meter wide road along this canal. This canal is 17.3 km-long canal and extends from Central railway station to Ennore creek. The cost of this project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) is worth Rs 9 crore.
Road will be constructed at Bharathi nagar, between IOC and Kargil Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, and between Manali expressway and Sadayankuppam. The ongoing improvement work is monitored regularly by mud road on canal formed by the department.
They have also decided to develop mud track into a road which will serve as a short route to reach nearby localities like Kodungaiyur and Satyamurthy Nagar. Currently this project is awaiting approval from the Central government. The work is expected to start in January 2013 and end by February 2013.
This road will also reduce encroachments along the canal when alternate houses will be allotted leading to construction of a wall. On improvement part of works, a wall of length of 10 km has almost been constructed. The width of the canal bed has been increased from 15 m to 25-40 m to prevent in neighbouring localities.
