Severe water and power crisis in Agra

power cut in AgraAgra- As summer has arrived, the residents of the city are facing acute water and electricity crisis. With mercury shooting up, the demand for electricity and water has also increased.

Despite Supreme Court orders, the power distribution company “Torrent Power” failed to supply uninterrupted electricity to the city. The business community has decided to initiate a campaign against the power company.

The company deliberately destroyed  Agra’s industrial base to protect the Taj Mahal from pollution. Due to frequent power cuts, many diesel generators were used resulting in increased pollution.

To highlight the electricity crisis, Agra’s National Chamber of Industries and Commerce has decided to send around 100,000 postcards to the Supreme Court in next few days.

The situation is so worse that even thousands of tonnes of potatoes in cold storage on city outskirts get rot due this erratic supply. In this regard, the Agra Cold Storage Owners’ Association has asked chief minister for uninterrupted electricity supply.

The Agra city witnesses 1.8 million domestic and foreign tourists every year. The inflow of domestic tourists is more in summers and due to power and water crisis, many hotel owners are struggling to keep their guests comfortable.

The century-old Agra Jal Sansthan (AJS) is also not able to maintain decadent pipeline network. The officer highlighted that the Yamuna water is getting dried. Thus, the Sansthan is not able to meet the growing water demand of the city.

The city demands around 320 million litres per day which increases much more in summer. Thousands of public hand pumps are no longer needed as the water table has gone down steeply

According to the president of the Braj Mandal Heritage Conservation Society, the state government is not able to address these issues. It has so many plans but none of them is being executed. For example, it sometimes think to divert Ganga water to Yamuna and sometime Chambak water to Yamuna.
