BMC likely to replace age old pipelines in South Mumbai

1 Comment Sub Category:Civic Issues,Mumbai,Municipality,Uncategorized Posted On: Apr 25, 2013

Old water pipelineBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently awarded a tender of Rs 33 crore to replace age old pipelines in South Mumbai.

The administration has proposed to repair or replace pipelines measuring 16.06 km from Colaba to Worli.

For A, B and E wards, a Rs 15.3 crore contract has been awarded for water mains to formerly blacklisted R P S Infraprojects that bid 22.48 per cent less than the estimated cost.

Another contract of Rs 18 crore was awarded to Perfect Engineering Associates for C and D wards. They had bid 22.10 per cent less than the estimated cost.

BMC will not provide any of valves, pipelines and related material and they will be sourced by the contractors itself. The work will be subject to a third-party audit.

Civic body chief has claimed that Mumbai is losing 30 percent of water to leaks currently. The target of reducing contamination by 5 percent can only be achieved by replacing old pipelines.

Such civic plans will be completed in one and half years from now, with a budget of over Rs 50 crore.

BMC has started a survey in every ward to identify buildings which have been constructed on top of water pipelines in the city.

Recently, a major water pipeline under a building in Govandi has bursted which took life of a resident leading the civic body to go on with this move.

Now, two other such buildings have been identified present in Jogeshwari and Andheri.

The building in Jogeshwari is a trauma care centre which is constructed by the civic body itself and this property in Andheri is a residential space constructed under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme.
