Hyderabad metro to get skywalks
Hyderabad- An idea has prop up in the mind of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMR) officials to open skywalks over metro station which will connect office, residential and commercial complexes, educational institutions and also important public buildings.
The work of skywalks can be handed over to Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) with an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore. This facility will save the time of users of Hyderabad metro rail to reach their respective designations. Although it will cost to user but will be very convenient.
Officials are planning to implement the fishbone concept of skywalks at different layers which will connect to the station and the nearby facilities including setting them up under the viaduct. Such a concept is used by Bangkok metro rail. Also, the private builders will have to bear 50 percent of the construction cost of skywalks.
It is expected that more than 200 skywalks will be build overhead of the proposed 66 stations. These stations will be constructed across the three dense traffic corridors of the twin cities. With facilities like lifts, escalators and staircases which connect to the roads and to the two-level stations, Skywalks will add more to it.
Along the 72 km of elevated metro rail, these skywalks will help in reducing traffic. It is so because metro riders can now use these skywalks to crossover the busy road sections near the stations. This network of skywalks will offer pedestrian friendly facilities which are planned for the transport system. Report regarding this matter will be prepared by IIT (Delhi).
