Dumping garbageThe Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) informed the High Court that it has constituted 182 ward committees out of 198 wards in the City.

The HC ordered BBMP to display the names of the committee members on notice board and its website with the names, phone numbers (both landline and mobile) and addresses of all the ward committee members to help citizens air their grievances.

A special division bench gave a week’s time for forming committees for the remaining 16 wards. A list of persons to be appointed as members in respect of 15 wards has been found not in accordance with law. They have not yet finalised the name.

The high court directed the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to ensure that enough space is reserved for disposing garbage or sewage treatment plant while forming new layouts in the City. It said the civic amenity sites could be made use for the purpose.

The court directed BBMP to take necessary steps to control the fire at Mandur landfill and work with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to prevent further damage.

It also said that steps should be taken to check the harmful effect of gases coming from the site. It was also brought to the notice of the court that garbage was being illegally dumped on the road corners. BBMP is going to take stringent action against the defaulters after they receive the pictures of such illegal dumping.

Presently, the Corporation is working in one shift processing 200 tonnes of garbage per day, so the bench ordered the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) near Singasandra on Hosur Road to work in three shifts to speed up garbage processing.

Around 429 acres 17.5 ghuntas of land have been identified and reserved for public utilities such as treatment plants, power, garbage facilities and water, as BDA told the court. As per Masterplan 2015 approved by the government the areas are Haralakunte, Hongasandra, Kachohalli, Machohalli , Seegehalli, Kannenahalli, Mavallipura, Chennenahalli, Yelachaguppe and Bilvaradahalli villages. An area about 10 acres has been allotted to the BBMP at Banashankari VI Phase, V Block for public purpose.
